Apple Developing Alternative Security Measures, Jailbroken iPhone Representation

fingerprint

An interesting application from Apple has surfaced on the use of alternative security measures from the U.S Trademark and Patent Office.  These stealthy methods would grant the user access to the handset through fingerprint or facial recognition. Another interesting find in the document labeled “Embedded Authentication Systems in an Electronic Device”, is the use of a jailbroken phone to represent these new security measures.

Continue reading for descriptions and images of these new features.

The first method described is the placement of a scanner positioned discretely behind the screen or in front of the device that can scan the fingerprint or vein patter. It also includes another method which would be capturing facial features via the included camera - which also poses another reason for a front mounted camera.

Some other seemingly impractical methods include voice recognition, recognizing the shape of a user’s ear before making a call, and even the collection of DNA samples to determine if the user’s genetic codes matches the pre-determined inputs. Unique gestures, tapping sequences, matching of shapes and icons, and placing of fingers on the screen in a certain order are some other examples.

Another interesting find, is the iPhone representation images depict a jailbroken phone showing a custom home screen background, custom settings icon, and even Installer.app and SMBPrefs.  Just after Apple clearly states that jailbreaking is illegal. Perhaps we will see more customization with the release of the iPhone 3.0 OS, however I’m sure Apple will not become a fan of jailbreaking any time soon.
