Lexiphanes Greek Dictionary

Lexiphanes Greek Dictionary
Category: Reference
Released: 07/06/09
Price: $1.99 (Download)

Lexiphanes is a Greek dictionary for your iPhone. It contains editions of the Liddell-Scott-Jones Greek-English Lexicon and Autenrieth's Homeric Lexicon (both now in the public domain, oldies but goodies).

Lexiphanes is really fast, with a slick and modern iPhone interface. It shows you the short definition of a word so you don't need to visit the whole entry. You can bookmark a word and come back to it later.

Lexiphanes can even convert Greek numerals to and from regular (Arabic) notation.

The short definitions feature was automatically generated from the text of the dictionaries. It's not perfect. We need your help! You can make changes and they'll be sent to us automatically.

Please read Lexidium's Instructions sheet carefully to learn how to input Greek characters. You can either turn on the Greek keyboard (new in OS 3.0) or you can use "beta code" input. Both work just fine.

There's a major typo in the title screen. It will be corrected in the next release.

Apple Employs Second Push Notification Testing: AIM

iphone_30_aim_push_notification_accept

Apple previously invited developers into a high-volume beta testing for the upcoming iPhone 3.0 Push Notification service using the AP (Associated Press) application. They’ve done it again, but instead have focused their efforts on Instant Messaging and prepared a special, 7-day build of AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) in order to stress test the push service:

As a developer actively working with iPhone OS, we would like your help in a private test of the Apple Push Notification service. For this test, we have selected AOL’s AIM Developer Preview for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our server.

The testing of these new notifications have already been through the rounds and screenshots have been submitted showing what exactly the push messages display to the user. This will definitely come in handy for decreasing battery use while still retaining the messages received through an IM service.

Check after the break for a first look at the screenshots

AT&T Responds to 3.0 MMS and Tethering

iphone-tethering

During the keynote this morning, it was announced casually that AT&T would not be supporting MMS until later this summer and no public plans for tethering plans at this moment. AT&T responded to these complaints and released the following statement:

Regarding MMS:

We absolutely will offer MMS on iPhone 3G S in late summer once we complete some system upgrades that will ensure our customers have the best experience with MMS.  These upgrades are unrelated to our 3G network.  When MMS is ready, we will let customers know.

Regarding offering a tethering plan:

We plan to offer one but we don’t have an announcement to make at this time.

Joe Chandler Executive Director AT&T Corporate Communications

If AT&T is nice enough, they’ll hopefully release MMS capability for free including them as SMS messages. Beta users (for the most part) have been using MMS and tethering flawlessly without paying extra fees, only having the ability to send/receive these messages on their account.

Would you pay extra for MMS? Or how about a tethering plan? I have a feeling many users will be resorting to jailbreaking and altered carrier files for these features.

Another Next-Generation iPhone Leak. Real or Fake?

3593955924_3b854e0555_b
iSpazio has posted pictures that they apparently received from a tipster who claimed the shots are from Apple’s development web server and are showing off pages that feature the next-generation iPhone (likely to go live directly after WWDC).

The first image shows of Apple’s Voice Memo application which is set for iPhone 3.0 and has been working wonderfully in the previous 3.0 beta firmwares. What’s interesting, is the images also show a front facing camera, presumably for the rumored mobile video iChat.

The second image shows off 3.0 tethering, however given the homescreen layout, it’s done on 2.x firmware rather than the 3.0 home screen layout. The store.apple.com image also appears to be the same exact layout as it currently is, but with a box reproduced to represent the new iPhone tethering, oddly with a different font than the Apple store always uses. Clearly, this appears to be fake.

iPhone-Dev Team: Do Not Install iTunes 8.2 + Uninstall Instructions

iphonejailbreak

Today Apple released the latest version of iTunes 8.2, which developers have been using over the past few weeks for the iPhone 3.0 beta. As usual, when new software is released, particularly iTunes or iPhone firmwares, the jailbreak community is always weary on whether the update is safe or not. The big issue is ‘Will this update break jailbreaking’? In this case, it appears it has, however @musclenerd claims its unintentional on Apple’s part.

Today’s iTunes 8.2 update changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects things like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they try to identify what’s connected. Also, ssh over usb breaks due to same reasons. Fixes are in the works but for now avoid 8.2

If you’re planning on jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch device anytime soon, be sure to avoid the iTunes 8.2 release until the fix is available.

In the act that you’ve already updated, follow the instructions below to fully uninstall iTunes 8.2 from your Mac at your own discretion. Close all instances of iTunes and type the following in Terminal. Do not mistype it and make sure it’s all in one line separated by spaces.

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Stay tuned for more updates and information from iPIB.

Apple Releases iTunes 8.2, Adds Support for iPhone 3.0

itunes8.2

Apple today released iTunes 8.2 via Software Update. This update adds support for iPhone 3.0 which is expected to be featured at Apple’s WWDC event next week and released very soon. Registered iPhone developers have had access to iTunes 8.2 since late April, when Apple released a new beta of iPhone software 3.0 which was not compatible with the current iTunes 8.1 release.

iTunes 8.2 now supports iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 Software Update. iTunes 8.2 also includes many accessibility improvements and bug fixes.

For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

Apple has also released a Quicktime update alongside the 8.2 release, which brings its version to 7.6.2 and adds several security and performance fixes.

It’s great to see Apple is ahead of the ball and preparing for a strong 3.0 release next week. The beta releases have gone smoothly, so I can’t imagine the final release doing any worse. Stay tuned for coverage of the WWDC event, 3.0 software features, and next generation iPhone information during next week!

Asahi Kasei Confirmed for Digital Compass in Next-Gen iPhone

safari-magnetometer

Apple Insider discovered that apple has tapped Japan’s Asahi Kasei to supply the magnetometer (digital compass) for the next generation iPhone expected for release at WWDC 2009.

People familiar with betas of the iPhone 3.0 software developers kit recently dug up several header files attributed to the Japanese manufacturer in a directory appropriately labeled “compass.” More specifically, the files identify Asahi Kasei’s azimuth sensor No. AK8973, a 16-pin leadless IC package measuring 4mm square and 0.7mm thick, as the chip that will help future iPhone users determine their direction. It bundles a master clock oscillator.

A digital compass will allow for increased Google Street View experience and will also improve turn-by-turn navigation as well as other orientation-based functons, as already evident in the G1. Another great feature would would have the user point their iPhone at an object or landmark, and have the GPS, accelerometer, and digital compass pinpoint that item and present an array of information.

Apparently, the magnetometer is one of three new hardware advances confirmed through discoveries, the others being a better, video-capable camera and a faster, 802.11n WiFi chip.
