How To: Use SlingPlayer Over 3G

Since the release of Slingmedia’s SlingPlayer Mobile application less than a few days, there’s been much controversy over AT&T’s restriction which makes the app usable only over WiFi. Apparently, the data usage would be too extreme for their servers, even though many other handsets on the AT&T service have the ability to stream video over Edge and 3G. However, as usual, the jailbreak community has come through with a fix to this problem.

The solution to streaming video over Edge and 3G is using a hack which serves to trick any application into thinking it’s operating over WiFi, even though it’s on a cellular provider’s data connection. You’ll be able to configure what applications are tricked, which can come in handy in many situations.

There’s two ways to go about enabling this hack: A simple install from Cydia, or manually editing files within the iPhone. The first solution is the easiest, however if you don’t want this hack applying to Skype and Fring as well as SlingPlayer, I would recommend doing the second example. A jailbroken iPhone is required for the following steps (Refer to our How-To section for more information).

Simple Install

Open the Cydia application and search for Tricker ThreeG. Installing this application will enable the hack in SlingPlayer, Skype, and Fring. Do a restart, and you’re good to go. It’s as simple as that!

Manual Install

Install the following packages through Cydia on the iPhone:

  • Mobile Substrate
  • OpenSSH
  • VoIPover3G

Once you’ve installed this applications and rebooted your phone, make sure you’re able to SSH into your phone and follow these instructions:

  1. SSH into your iPhone and go to the root directory “/”
  2. Navigate to /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries
  3. With a text editor, open VoIPover3G.plist
  4. Look for the following lines (CMD + F is very helpful in this situation)
  5. Filter = {Bundles = (”com.Fringland.Fring”, “”, “com.audiofile.Interstate”, “”);};

    Add this part: , “com.slingmedia.SlingPlayer”

    Making it look like this:

    Filter = {Bundles = (”com.Fringland.Fring”, “”, “com.audiofile.Interstate”, “”, “com.slingmedia.SlingPlayer”);};

  6. Save these changes and upload the file back to it’s previous location: /Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries
  7. Reboot your iPhone – You’re all set. SlingPlayer should now stream over 3G!

So now that you’ve successfully hacked the iPhone to stream video over 3G, start watching those shows!

Cydia Store Now Open

cydiastore2The much discussed Cydia Store has launched and is now open.  I discussed Jay Freeman’s opening of the store and reason behind this decision in a post just yesterday.

Cydia Store is nothing more than an update that allows the option of purchasing apps within the current Cydia app.  I was hoping the update would provide a solution similar to Apple’s App Store, but the new store allows quick and easy transactions for apps.  You can either sign in with your Facebook or Google Account, as well as Amazon for payments.  While the store only provides payments through the above logins, Freeman said Paypal will be implemented within the next week.

The first app, developer by the Cydia creator himself, is called Cyntact, which allows you to view address book pictures along side the name when browsing your contacts.  This is a very cool feature, and quite reasonably price at only $1.00.

The new Cydia Store, requires a jailbroken phone and a recent update, allowing access to the new store options and applications.  Once updated, the new applications will appear with a blue highlight, which is only Cyntact at the moment; however more apps will be added soon.

Although this solution is not as ideal as the iTunes App Store – at surely not as mainstream – it still provides an avenue for developers to gain revenue on apps denied by Apple or purely applications they’d like to share with the third-party community.

Will the Cydia Store post a thread to Apple’s App Store?  Perhaps, a lawsuit… Luckily saurik has his lawyers on hand ready for any action.

xGPS 1.2 For Jailbroken iPhones Released

A few weeks back, we introduced you to xGPS, one of the first turn-by-turn and voice operated navigation for the iPhone. The first release was in its preliminary stages and had many problems to be addressed.  It has just been updated to 1.2 provided fixes for many of those quirks and is now quite an app. One of the biggest improvements shown in this update is voice instruction support. xGPS features the new items below.

  • Wireless transfer of your map files
  • Google Terrain Maps
  • GPS information
  • English voice instructions
  • Night mode
  • Access to GPS traces on your computer

This application is only available to those who have jailbroken their iPhones.  If you haven’t jailbroken, this could be a major incentive to do so.  Check the xGPS site for more information.

Apple Bluetooth Keyboard Connected With iPhone

Ubiqkom has posted a video on their blog showing an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard providing input to an iPhone.  They report it works with all apps that use keyboard input and as usual, requires a jailbroken iphone.

This is very similar to the foldable keyboards that people used to use with the Palm units.  Although you won’t see me carrying around my bluetooth keyboard, this would be very neat to try out.

This proves that connectivity is possible between a bluetooth keyboard and iPhone, hopefully Apple can manage to implement this in a future firmware for all the non-jailbroken folks.

xGPS: Turn-By-Turn Navigation for iPhone

We know you’ve all been waiting for Tom Tom or TeleNav to release their turn-by-turn GPS software, however this has not happened yet.  Fortunately, xGPS turn-by-turn with voice navigation GPS software is now available via Cydia.  If you’ve been contemplating jailbreaking, now is the time to do it.  xGPS uses iPhone’s native maps while providing real-time text and voice directions.  This is something many iPhone users have been wanting for quite some time now. Understandably, Apple has strict requirements and restrictions on apps submitted to the store, especially involving GPS software.  As usual, the developers came through providing these wonderful 3rd party apps for the iPhone community.

More information and review after the break.
