iPhone Prototype Firmware Floating Around

iphoneprototype2
Despite Apple making requests to take down the eBay auctions and also exploiting their power to remove the incriminating videos from YouTube, the firmware has now been released into the wild. They will most likely not be able to remove all instances of the firmware, except asking site hosting those files to remove them, but I’m sure they will have their team nagging at the legs of the releaser.

Arnold Kim on Twitter, reports that he has released the prototypes onto the web, just last night after the Ebay auctions we’re taken down. This prototype could potentially assist developers in producing new software and also take a look into some of the items Apple decided to withhold from the current iphone.

Fix for iPhone 2.2.1 Firmware iTunes Crash

With the recent release of iPhone firmware 2.2.1 some users have reported syncing an iPhone or iPod results in iTunes crashing.  This is obviously a bug overlooked, however Apple released an easy fix which was sent out to the affected customers.

Here’s are the instructions to fix this problem, according to Apple:

Dear Customer,

Recently, we uncovered an issue which was causing iTunes to unexpectedly quit when synced with an iPod or an iPhone. This issue impacted a small number of users, and we have identified your account as potentially being affected.

If you have experienced this issue, please follow these steps in order to sync your iPod or iPhone with iTunes:
1. Launch iTunes
2. Select “Deauthorize Computer” from the Store menu
3. Enter your iTunes Store Account ID and Password, then click the Deauthorize button
4. Next, choose “Authorize Computer” from the Store menu
5. Enter your iTunes Store Account ID and Password, then click the Authorize button

Once you have successfully deauthorized and reauthorized your computer, you should be able to sync your iPod or iPhone to iTunes.

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced as a result of this issue.

Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer.
iTunes Store Team

Many users have been successful with this fix, but others are still having problems.  Apparently, if you “purchase” a free App from the app store after following the above steps syncing will be successful again.
