ulc042608dr

Dev-team member, Musclenerd, sent out a tweet earlier today about an upcoming live demo of the Yellowsn0w unlock for iPhone 3.0. The live demonstration will showcase their iPhone 3g carrier unlock this Tuesday, and should answer many questions.

The dev-team also state that a final iPhone 3.0 jailbreak that will work with iTunes 8.2 is in the final stages of testing and should be available very soon. Stay tuned on iPIB for a link to the live video stream tomorrow, or follow @MuscleNerd on Twitter for updates.

iPhone-Dev Team: Do Not Install iTunes 8.2 + Uninstall Instructions

iphonejailbreak

Today Apple released the latest version of iTunes 8.2, which developers have been using over the past few weeks for the iPhone 3.0 beta. As usual, when new software is released, particularly iTunes or iPhone firmwares, the jailbreak community is always weary on whether the update is safe or not. The big issue is ‘Will this update break jailbreaking’? In this case, it appears it has, however @musclenerd claims its unintentional on Apple’s part.

Today’s iTunes 8.2 update changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects things like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they try to identify what’s connected. Also, ssh over usb breaks due to same reasons. Fixes are in the works but for now avoid 8.2

If you’re planning on jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch device anytime soon, be sure to avoid the iTunes 8.2 release until the fix is available.

In the act that you’ve already updated, follow the instructions below to fully uninstall iTunes 8.2 from your Mac at your own discretion. Close all instances of iTunes and type the following in Terminal. Do not mistype it and make sure it’s all in one line separated by spaces.

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Stay tuned for more updates and information from iPIB.

iPhone Dev Team Says 10.5.7 Safe for Jailbreak, DFU Bug Fixed

iphonejailbreak

After having to patch in older version of files, or using third party usb hubs to jailbreak from a preventive bug in 10.5.6 that wouldn’t recognize DFU mode, 10.5.7 has fixed it all.  Yesterday, the iPhone Dev-Team shot out a tweet letting users know that the 10.5.7 update is good to go:

The new 10.5.7 Leopard update is safe. In fact it’s more jailbreak-friendly than 10.5.6, since the DFU-mode bug is gone.

It’s good to hear, for once, that Apple has not locked down any options with an update. In this case, the update fixed just what you would expect apple to block.

iPhone 3.0 Jailbreak Confirmed

iPhone Jailbreak

The Dev Team never ceases to amaze the iPhone community at how fast they pop out updates and innovative information. They have already gotten ahold of the new iPhone 3.0 SDK and confirmed that you will be able to jailbreak iPhone firmware 3.0 when it’s available.

However, be reminded that jailbreak users running unlocked phones via YellowSn0w, to hold off on jailbreaking their iPhone on 3.0 software until all the issues are cleared up.

If you find yourself with access to the 3G IPSW for 3.0 via the iPhone Dev Center program, and you are using yellowsn0w, do not update or restore to that official IPSW. You will lose yellowsn0w and find yourself unable to revert the baseband to get it back.

And for those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices. It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update.

It’s no surprise that they have already cracked the 3.0 firmware, however as we’ve seen the past, Apple may throw some surprises in last minute differing the beta from the final release. If you’ve got those “itchy update fingers” it would be wise to hold off until everything is stable and you get the thumbs up from the Dev Team.

Rock Your Phone Offers Alternative App Store

Rock Your Phone

Saurik’s release of the Cydia App Store just happened earlier this week, and now another jailbreak app store has been introduced.  Rock Your Phone is now the second third-party app store available for iPhone users who have jailbroken their phones.

Rock Your Phone offers ‘innovative apps’ and even a 10-day free trial before buying, something many people wish Apple would implement.  The App Store currently only hosts five apps, including one of the classic apps, Intelliscreen.  However, it is in beta and just released yesterday, so this is understandable.

In order to access the Rock Your Phone apps, users must signup on their website and download the desktop client to install the store on their device.

Not only is there now two third-party app stores, but they offer paids apps along with free trials.  I’m not sure Apple is going to like this very much.

Untethered Jailbreak for iPod Touch 2G Now Available

iPhone 2G Untethered

Today is an exciting day for the 2G owners, especially if you’ve been waiting for an untethered method to appear. The dev team has released the first full iPod Touch 2G jailbreak, which exploits a flaw in the bootrom explained below:

The iPod Touch 2G is now another member of the “pwned for life” family. It has a fatal flaw in its bootrom that means you will always be able to pwn these devices no matter what firmware updates come along. This is the full, untethered jailbreak, something that iPod Touch 2G users have not had before today.

The untethered jailbreak is available here, although it is not yet integrated in QuickPwn or Pwnage tool. For more information on the untethered aspect you can read the wiki.

MuscleNerd (developer) states that you can drop this file into your existing PwnageTool or xPwn Flow or combine it with the nor-only variations ot make this easy to install from iTunes without touching your main fs.  If any of you decide to take this route, let us know how it goes.

Read more for instructions from the developers.

Cydia Store Now Open

cydiastore2The much discussed Cydia Store has launched and is now open.  I discussed Jay Freeman’s opening of the store and reason behind this decision in a post just yesterday.

Cydia Store is nothing more than an update that allows the option of purchasing apps within the current Cydia app.  I was hoping the update would provide a solution similar to Apple’s App Store, but the new store allows quick and easy transactions for apps.  You can either sign in with your Facebook or Google Account, as well as Amazon for payments.  While the store only provides payments through the above logins, Freeman said Paypal will be implemented within the next week.

The first app, developer by the Cydia creator himself, is called Cyntact, which allows you to view address book pictures along side the name when browsing your contacts.  This is a very cool feature, and quite reasonably price at only $1.00.

The new Cydia Store, requires a jailbroken phone and a recent update, allowing access to the new store options and applications.  Once updated, the new applications will appear with a blue highlight, which is only Cyntact at the moment; however more apps will be added soon.

Although this solution is not as ideal as the iTunes App Store – at surely not as mainstream – it still provides an avenue for developers to gain revenue on apps denied by Apple or purely applications they’d like to share with the third-party community.

Will the Cydia Store post a thread to Apple’s App Store?  Perhaps, a lawsuit… Luckily saurik has his lawyers on hand ready for any action.
